Adolescent Evaluation of Gender Imagery in Television Advertisements
A study done with teenagers and modern beer advertisements suggested that kids are very well aware to the suggestions done in certain commercials. When asked to describe each gender, many of the teenagers criticized how the women were viewed and felt indifferent towards male characters. This help suggest to psychologist that gender schema is also actualized by medial presentations. However they are puzzled by the difference in attitudes and ideas depending on the character they are viewing. Study suggest however that such commercials play an important part in shaping one's gender schema, identity, and acceptance towards others ideas.
I personally believe that this is true. As teenagers in this generation we are exposed to the media since the very prime of our lives. We learned a lot things from TV, such as how to speak and count with Dora, so it is very likely that our behaviors and attitudes are shaped by this as well. It is very odd however that we would have different reactions to actors preforming the same behavior whether it is a male or female.
Do you think you are personally affect by the media? Why do you think so?
