The rise and fall of the laboratory racist
In this article the history or racism is dicussed and imporant questions are addressed. When did this all begin? what is racism? The first known attempt to racism is the holocaust and portraying the Jews as the devil. As time went by the enlightenment better empathsized this concept in bible teachings. As time went by it became more and more of a determine factor in social ranking, separation. As time has progressed into the more modern ages, people disagree with having these feelings, but it is known in a different kind of way. Studies of the human gnome show that a person is even more likely to show similarity with those of different races than those who look very alike. So what makes us think so differently?
Although people may try to deny it ideas are always apparent in ways of analyzing one another. We are all similar however, more similar than those around us. Is there really a difference between us and those around us? Should race play an important factor in our life?

Adolescent Evaluation of Gender Imagery in Television Advertisements
A study done with teenagers and modern beer advertisements suggested that kids are very well aware to the suggestions done in certain commercials. When asked to describe each gender, many of the teenagers criticized how the women were viewed and felt indifferent towards male characters. This help suggest to psychologist that gender schema is also actualized by medial presentations. However they are puzzled by the difference in attitudes and ideas depending on the character they are viewing. Study suggest however that such commercials play an important part in shaping one's gender schema, identity, and acceptance towards others ideas.
I personally believe that this is true. As teenagers in this generation we are exposed to the media since the very prime of our lives. We learned a lot things from TV, such as how to speak and count with Dora, so it is very likely that our behaviors and attitudes are shaped by this as well. It is very odd however that we would have different reactions to actors preforming the same behavior whether it is a male or female.
Do you think you are personally affect by the media? Why do you think so?

The Ghost of Mississippi Still Haunt Hollywood
This article talks about a widely beloved movie called The Help. This movie is meant to showcase the time of the civil rights era where 2 African American maids tell the story of their difficulties. Although this movie has been widely praised throughout the world it has caused some controversial outbreaks, even law suits for its portrayals. The actors and writers proclaim that there is no malice intended but many people have been concerned.
I personally have watched this movie and believe that it is a harmless portrayals of this era. As a film, the actors are forced to play the part as intended in order to showcase the story line. It is their job to make the story as real as possible. Do you believe that movies intentionally showcase malice by their acting?

Stereotypes can deter consumer purchases, research says:
In  this video, a University of Minnesota professor goes explains a research conducted in the school in which they studied the effects of stereotypes on the purchases of consumers and found that when people were found in jobs that were male dominated they were less likely to feel comfortable in the situation and they'd be most likely to avoid getting help over all. She then proceeds to list solutions to this problem such as advertising a female coworker or spraying a vanilla scent to calm people.
This video shows the effects of stereotyping on everyday life. It can drive certain consumers away and cause a sense of intimidation when looking for advice. This is just one of the many ways that stereotypes affect our perception today. Do you feel that this is a major factor in the amount of customers?

Modern Day prejudice:
In this article a student is forced to question if discrimination has actually gone down throughout the years, or it is really a factor in everyday life today. She continues to explain about her current feelings of the situation as well as to the realization that is a modern victim of its effects today. After being rejected by her peers for her religion, she is forced to decide the importance of group acceptance or her beliefs.
She among many others is the victim of ideas today. Her among many other cases show that these ideals are still based today. Although they might not be used as blatantly as many others, they showcase how our perceptions can widely be distorted by simple statements.

Place and Gender
In this article a group of people were asked to acknowledge the stereotypes that affect today's society. To many's surprise they discovered that people were fully aware of such discriminating factors such as race, gender, religion, etc. It starts by discussing the ideas that people have today of stereotypes and then applies the actual truth to them. Gender roles change our perceptions to what we are allowed socially accepted to do.
No matter what it is known that there differences between each group of people. After all we are all different. But should these differences define us as humans and to our restrictions?

Race-the Power of Illusion
In this article it is discussed whether the concept of race really actually exist. It states that we as humans are all part of one similar race that among the years have adapted into their own society. People look different because their bodies have adapted to their conditions. For example in hot climates with a lot of sun, having dark skin and curly hair can subcutaneously help against the heat. This is why it is possible that African's gained these traits to  be able to survive in their environments. We are all part of a superior group and so the question is posed, are we all really so different?
I think this makes a very important point. It is possible indeed that we are all part of a similar race. Even in the bible it is believe that we all came from a group of people called Adam and Eve. It is true that the characteristic developed by each group of people was made to help them survive in their environment.
Is there such thing as race?

In this short video a group of people analyze the stereotypes that are commonly associated with their ethnic group type. It is an educational video done for a media class that explores the thoughts and feelings of those centered around these ideas. It is a short very well spoken and to the point that really relates to viewers on any of those sides. It first list all the ideas and names that these people are associated with, then it challenges them. Can you relate to this? Have any of these concepts been inferred about you?

Film Portrayals of Hispanic Before the 1960's (from discovering multicultural america)
This book is centered around the stereotypes that have shaped america at certain points in history. Among them comes the the first perceptions of Hispanics in movies. Since the beginning of film Hollywood interpreted Hispanics as either: "el Bandido" or Mexican bandit, "the half-breed harlot,"  or the lusty, hot tempered female, "the male buffoon" or unintelligent male, "the female clown", "The Latin lover" and "The dark lady." Many people believe that this helped perform perceptions of Latins and effect their treatment through out America.
To this day when many people are asked to in vision a Hispanic male movie role they would most likely imagine a Latin lover or Mexican bandit. Although these movies are not the same anymore and their factors are not as strong, they helped form many stereotypes that were believed by many. As time has gone by and people have become less gullible, these are not as strongly viewed today but its effects at a certain point cannot be denied.
So my question to you, Do you think these ideas have affected your personal perception of Hispanics?

Stereotypes Bite Back
In this newspaper article many parents and critics discuss the usage of certain stereotypical ideas in Disney movies. One example being the very well known movie Shark Tale, which portrays the antagonist as sharks that are very similar to the Italian mob. Many people were outraged and felt that such portrayals of Italian people being in mobs colors children's perspectives for future ideas at  a very early age. Disney and other parents argue that kids are too young to take such connections seriously. This has caused a very questionable debate on the effects these movies can have on a child.
Children are very absorbent from the beginning. When being exposed to such ideas from a very young age it becomes engraved into their thoughts. However eliminating these exposures in movies will not make a huge difference. As mentioned in this article, much of the population still see Italians as being mobsters. An idea they call the "Godfather Effect," which occurred after people started viewing Italians as mobsters after watching The Godfather. It is most efficient to teach the child what is correct so that they don't become guible to such ideas later on.
What is your opinion on this topic? Are children really affected by such ideas? What should be done to help eliminate such enclosed ideas?

White on White: When the West Represents the Rest Who Comes Off Worse?
In this magazine article, the writer is evaluating the validity of certain stereotypical ideas of the past. He is using the studies done by a researcher named Jan Nederveen Pieterse, as a reference to what many people believed about the African American race. Pieterse conducted a study in which people were shown photographs and they had to describe the person based on how they looked. In the study they found many uncertain conclusions drawn from a simple image, many of which were negative. This lead the writer to search for the reason for stereotypes and lead the conclusion that stereotypes are more then just simplified images, but rather a result of a complex dynamic of historical antagonisms.
When stereotypes first began will forever be a mystery to many, however it is apparent that people were not precise and created these for social reassurance. This leads to many unanswered questions: What is a Stereotype exactly? Where did they first being? What makes one culture better than the other?

Question.

The reason for me choosing this topic is mainly because it is a subject of matter that is still present in today's society, however, we dont seem to pay much attention towards it. Even though it is a controversial subject that not mentioned often, it is still hidden in people's ideals and beliefs. Because of this, and other matters I have decided to research how this affects today's society.

So my question is: What stereotypes are still present in america today, and how they still affect our population?
