Stereotypes can deter consumer purchases, research says:
In this video, a University of Minnesota professor goes explains a research conducted in the school in which they studied the effects of stereotypes on the purchases of consumers and found that when people were found in jobs that were male dominated they were less likely to feel comfortable in the situation and they'd be most likely to avoid getting help over all. She then proceeds to list solutions to this problem such as advertising a female coworker or spraying a vanilla scent to calm people.
This video shows the effects of stereotyping on everyday life. It can drive certain consumers away and cause a sense of intimidation when looking for advice. This is just one of the many ways that stereotypes affect our perception today. Do you feel that this is a major factor in the amount of customers?

I don't feel this would be a major factor, but I don't know how extensive this perception is on the sales of companies. Perhaps if there's more and larger research done of this, then there could be a correlation made and applied to companies to determine if the stores should be changed to increase the amount of customers.
ReplyDeleteI do agree that stereotypes can affect consumer purchases, but I think it is also greatly dependent on the business and what types of stereotypes are present. Even in today's society, the business world is a mainly male occupation and I think that is a stereotype that makes many women feel uncomfortable, but i a business such as waiting tables, it is more open to both genders and lacks discrimination of specific gender.
